82 kz1000 csr Chopper Project
15 Jul 2011 13:14
I'm a big guy (6'7") so the frame is 6up and 8out with a goose neck and 40 degree rake to give me some extra room. I got really lucky with the donor bike- it only had 500 original miles. Still had the factory tires on it.
Running a 200 tire, and a springer front end (saber-tooth from american suspension, scary sharp spike, batwing trees). I have a about a year into this project, and about 2-3 weeks before I go into paint. Thinking of doing a high gloss red for the frame and front legs and a matte finish dark gray for the tank fender and battery box.
Had to get a custom 5 bolt sprocket made from sidewinder with a spacer to fit onto the fat-spoke DNA wheels. Doing my own custom 4 into 2 exhaust with side exits just behind the front sprocket. Running pod filters. I welded an 8" heavy duty mountain bike shock from the center post to the bottom of the seat to soften the ride a bit (you can see the shock laying on the table in some of the pictures). I'm going to use my iphone mounted on the handlebars with a gps-speedo app. there will be 10" risers with 36" wide drag bars. Using a WWII M1 ammo box for the battery box.
Should look pretty sweet by the time it's done. Doing all the work myself in a friends metal shop.

We can do alot of things in our shop, fabbing that front end is def. not one of them! I would love to take credit for it, but can't american suspension . They can powdercoat or paint the legs, but I wanted them to match my frame color. I think it was like $2,500.00 with shipping. A pretty penny I know, but once I saw it- I had to have it.

Wanted to give an update on the project, we are almost finished. We are about 90% on the rebuilding of the bike after powder-coating. I did not use any paint on this build for a couple of reasons. Powder-coating is a lot tougher and lasts longer; secondly, it's a hell of a lot less expensive than having something proffesionally painted.
The wiring is almost done; aside from the headlight, handlebar switches, and stuffing everything into the battery box. I also have to run brake lines and cables. Other than that- we are pretty much there!
