KZ1000 motor in a KZ650???...

I've got a line on a 1980 LTD1000 for cheap$$$. I'm wondering if the motor from that bike will fit into my spare '79 KZ650 frame. Are the two frames really that dimensionally different?

It will fit, but it's not a bolt in.

It's been done a few times, and discussed a bunch of times, a search should lead you to threads with pics.

Will take some major work, frame mods, reinforcement, etc. It can and has been done. Such as below...

I also seem to recall that in order to adjust the valves, the motor must be pulled (as the valve cover is too tight a squeeze)...does that ring a bell for anyone?

There was one 650 with a 1000 motor in it that the owner claimed he could remove the cam cover in the frame. He said he made special motor mounts and maybe some other stuff to drop the motor lower in the frame.

That was a long time ago though (maybe 3 years or so).

There are more (especially in the archived site) but I quit.

Thanks, I had "engine" in there too is why I guess I didnt find much. Doesnt sound like all that great of an idea now with the weak frame. I already have a GPZ750. I do like the FJ motored one, but Im a Kaw guy. I think I might put the 1000J motor in the Z1 I have with the incorrect 77 1000 motor thats kind of worn out. Am I going to run into any major stuff doing that ?

Naw... a pic I've had in my folder from a similer topic a couple years ago. Don't know where the pic came from. But yes, very sweet bike and would look great with some little "KZ550" emblems! Talk about kicking some a** at the local burger joint! Kids nowadays would never know the difference...:)
