No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNewb here. Was told my 81' KZ440LTD needed a new starter, though was told by someone else it may just need cleaned out or could be fixed with a rebuild kit.

Looking at rebuild kits on eBay I see two, the same price, supposedly both will work but they appear to offer different parts/pieces

Can anyone confirm which one I actually need? I'm going to start working on my bike since it's been under a tarp for over a year since I bought it and am curious which one I need.

Thanks!

EDIT: Woops, wrong forum. I can't change it now.

Don't assume anything & don't believe anything the po said. At this point you probably really don't know for certain what's wrong. Does the relay click when you press the Start button?

I would troubleshoot the start button, starter relay & starter motor.
You'll need a good battery & a multimeter (batterystuff.com Scorpion AGM & VC97).
If you plan on keeping the bike, the factory service manual is an invaluable tool.
The KZ400.com site might have a manual. maybe???

It might be a simple problem like loose, or corroded battery cables, so check there first before ordering parts. The Negative (-) battery cable goes usually to an engine mounting bolt. The Positive goes from the battery(+), to the starter solenoid, from it to the starter motor, so any of these may be loose, or have corrosion.

Starter motors have carbon brushes(actually, a solid piece of carbon, pushing via spring to the starter motor's commutator), They wear out after years of use, and need replacement, along with having the commutator turned on a lathe, to remove burned spots.

Could also be a weak battery or worn starter clutch, depending on the symptoms.

The battery has been charged, headlights come on, all that.

You can hear a click when turning the key but it doesn't turn over or anything or try to.

Take the startern out and test it by applying battery power. If it spins no problem then you can probably assume it is good. If not, take it apart and check the brushes. Sometimes they get stuck. They are not that complicated.

How many volts in the battery? Turn the key, if the voltage drops below 12, you need a battery. If it stays at 12 or above try crossing the solenoid contacts. The starter can spin but under load it won't if the bushings are bad.
One thing at a time.

Unsure, it was last Spring when I messed with it last. Once it dries up and warms up I'll get back to it. :)
