mounting dyna coils
08 Jun 2013 21:57
Putting new coils on the lady.
It seems I have to get longer mounting bolts and some washers to lock them down.
Is that pretty common?
Also, is this the proper direction?
It seems the factory spacers will rub against the terminal. I applied electrical tape around spacer.

If possible, get some additional heatshrink tubing over the sparkplug wires that will come close to the tank. Another rider on a different forum had his Dyna coils mounted like your are, and he could not figure out why there was a power loss. The bike ran great with the tank off, but as soon as it was installed, the power loss came back.
He figured out the sparks were firing into the bottom of the tank, so more heatshrink tubing in certain areas fixed the problem.

You might want to put some silicone around the wire connectors as well. They have been known to arc.

silicone on the coil to connector wire screws/ins is a great thing to do...let it sit a few hours and forget about it
they are kind of pain and the stock bolts can be hard to re-use ...tight fit

I see a lot of post for using a nylon spacer instead of the metal. One on the terminal end anyway, pretty close to the bolt there.

I paint the screw and ring terminal with liquid electrical tape. You can buy this from just about any auto parts store. Just make sure you get a version that is gasoline/oil resistant - some of the product I've seen in Home Depot doesn't say this.

09 Jun 2013 12:15Dyna coil mount instructions for large Kaw fours recommend coil towers pointing upward and forward.asevans wrote: Well shoot. I had 50/50 chance of looking stupid. That's why I asked though. Thanks Aaron
But some installers prefer down and rearward (for whatever reason).
Recommendations for other models may be with coil towers pointing down and toward the rear.
My stupid tie-wrap insulators keep me riding.
