Would there be any reason why I shouldn't use Eiko 1891 bulbs.
14V 0.24A 3.36W - click! The Eiko bulbs are longer but fit fine.
The Kawasaki.com site isn't working at the moment, so I can't check the oem part numbers there.

Partzilla lists these two: 92069-018 BULB 12V 3W ... & ... 92069-1007 BULB 12V 3.4W
The instrument panel has 10 bulbs, so the part nos. would be an either-or sort of thing.
The site lumps parts together, so I'm not sure if the two are interchangeable. Thanks.

I would just order the original Stanley type 3.4w bulbs; then you'll know they will work properly. I bought some from these folks before and they were exactly like the originals. The 3.4w Stanley bulbs appear near the bottom right side of page in link.

At Kawasaki.com the meter diagram for the 81 650 lists 3W bulbs; the 82 lists 3.4W. My guess is that the 81 model bulbs are the same wattage as the 82, so the 3.4W will be fine most likely.

These might be a safer choice: Eiko #1815 - 14V 0.2A 2.8W

If you have the Kawasaki Service Manual for the 1981 take a look at the specifications page in the front. I don't have the manual for the 1981, but the 1977, 78, 79, and 80 specs all call for 3.4w, so I would be very surprised if the 1981 used 3w and then they switched back to 3.4w in 1982. Also, the wiring diagrams for the 1981 models show 3.4w bulbs. Sounds like just another boo boo on Kawasaki.com. Ed

Thanks. There doesn't seem to be anything in the factory manual about the meter bulbs/lamps. The old bulbs are Stanley 12V 3.4W. Only two need replacing, so I'll get a pair of the Eikos for now. I'd guess that the 1891 bulbs would be safe - at 14.5V they'd be putting out ~3.48W. I don't know the amperage of the Stanley bulbs, but I'd guess the same as the 1891s (3.4W/14V = 0.24A).

I guess the newer manuals are different than the ones for the older models. The ones I have show the following on or around Page 7:

The 81 manual doesn't have that chart.

Just posting a link. It seems to have a lot of info.

I got new bulbs from superbrightleds.com. The bulbs are such a bitch to get out, I don't want to have to do it again!

I'm pretty happy with the outcome. The new "bulbs" have a slight bluish tint, giving my gauges a pretty aqua hue.

Easy on the eyes, easy to see at night. For the last couple years, I'd just have to steal a glance at my gauges as I passed under a streetlight!

Here's what I used.

www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/ba9s-ba...-power-led/958/2359/

These would be even brighter:

www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/ba9s-ba...-bulb-9-led-tower/9/

Make sure you have the bayonet base bulbs (like my 1980 KZ750-H1) and not the wedge type (like my '87 KZ1000-P6), I'm not sure when Kawasaki switched over.

If your bike has wedge base bulbs, go for something like this:

www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/miniatu...ngle-wedge-base/206/

I used cool white in my gauges. If you decide to go with a different color, like purple or green, make sure it puts out a shitload of lumens, or you could end up with dim clocks.

Six bucks a pop might seem steep, but consider that you'll (most likely) never have to change them again, they make no appreciable heat and pose no appreciable drain on the charging system.
