OK, I'll go check the relay out and then go from where you said earlier. I appreciate your help. Thanks a lot.

B, perhaps this will help. The starter sol. is just an electromagnetic contactor. Which has two parts. when starter button is depressed it energises the magnetic feild which slams the solonoid's contacts shut.(the big wires) the click you hear indicate that the magnetic part is working. of the two lugs, 1 is directly connected to batt. & will have power at all times. the other goes to starter motor & should have power when button is pushed. A quick check for starter motor is apply power directly from batt. to starter lug. or arcing directly accross solonoid lugs. If you do either of these, be aware the starter draws @ 20-30 amps and will try to eat whatever you opt for arcing with. if going to starter motor from batt, somthing in the range of jumper wires is best. luck G

I'll try the jumper cables. That seems easy enough. I assume I shouldn't keep the wire hot for too long?

B all your' doing is checking starter motor for function.if it's good, starter will crank immediatly. If not, you know there is a problem w/ starter motor. G

I just hooked the batt positive directly to the starter lug and nothing happened. Do I need to do anything with the negative jumper wires?

Sorry. Starters are pretty simple. they recieve the full power of Battery at field core lug, and ground via their mounting bolts to chassis. I haven't worked on 13 in decades, but quess that starter can be removed & re-installed wihout going inside, K's of the era usually used a starter reduction gear which was located on it's own shaft. luck g

The starter will R&R the same way as on a 1000 or 650. In the manual it will tell you how to rebuild it so you do not have to buy a whole new one. First I would check the connection right on the starter. Make sure that it is not just a bad electrical connection. Also make sure that the ENTIRE engine is not seized up by turning the crank manually. However, a seized engine would have been also indicated by a enormous spark when you attempted to bypass the solenoid. After you have tried all of this, than remove the starter. Pull the brushes first and check them. Make sure that the starter turns freely. If the starter brushes look good than you have to replace the whole starter. If the starter brushes are warn down than follow the instructions in the manual.
