Hi all. My 79 KZ1300 was running great and then the other day I tried to start it and after a strange electrical sound (after hitting the start button) the solenoid relay (the component that the positive battery wire leads to) just clicks and nothing else happens. I try to start it and all I get is that relay click. A nice loud ckick. Any ideas as to where to go from here? Is is shot? Thanks for the help. -Michael

The voltage is fine. See why is I'm so confused? Electrical problems rule! Not.

Check the voltage out of the relay while you press the start button. If you have voltage out than it is the starter, if not than it is the relay.

Thanks. Out via the two smaller wires or the 2nd large wire?

Disconnect the starter wire and test that lug and the frame. It may also be that one of those connections are bad or loose. If you get juice out of the starter lug, than check the brushes in your starter or the lug on the starter.

The terminal that the wire connects to with a nut.

Ahh, that makes sense. I huess that's why they call the nuts that hold a tire on "lug" nuts. I'll try all you mentioned. I found a second relay for very cheap so either I have the fix or a cheap spare part. If it's the starter I'll just have to dig a bit deeper into the ol' pocket. Thanks again.

If it is the starter, most likely it is the brushes and they make rebuild kits for them.

But if it's the starter brushes I'd still be hearing something from the starter, wouldn't I? The starter makes not a sound and when I touch it there's no feel of it doing anything. I'd think if it were getting any juice it'd be doing something. Anything.

Not true. If the brushes (or brush) is gone you will not hear a thing.
