I'm going to completely rewire my 78 KZ1000. I was wondering if it's worth getting a new regulator/rectifier instead of my old 2 piece unit. I can handle everything else wiring wise, but the charging system and ignition system worry me. Any suggestions on where to begin?....I've got a clymer comming soon so that'll give me the basic schematics. I don't know if it was a stock move but the harness is completely covered in electrical tape and is awfully sloppy looking to me and looks like it will flame on if I hit a bump just right. I've wired up several custom trikes I've built but it seems cars are a touch simpler for me to understand right now.

If it is worth it to go ahead and get one, what is a good unit, and where can I get it. I want to do this bike right.

Check the thread for snerff's 78 kz1000. He's getting a new combo reg/rec from Z1 enterprises. Maybe he can give you a link to it.

snerffs thread

Does your bike have points? Or does it have electronic ignition of some sort?

I have a points version of snerffs bike schematic here.

One of the cheapest sealed connector systems you can get is the Tyco Universal Mate-N-Lok Sealed. These can be had at www.digikey.com and are the cheapest sealed connectors I have found. I highly recommend these over bullet connectors whereever you can use them.
