About 20 years ago, I put a Dyna S ignition and Accel coils ( yellow ones) on my KZ and have not have any problems. The only thing I remember from back then was that the bike started quicker that before which I think had more to do with the new coils with a hotter spark compared to the old stock ones. The point I'm making is that the combo of the two is worth it.

PS The coils did come with yellow 9mm wires which did look neat.

The elect modules usually have a switching converter inside that bumps the primary voltage up. When you crank a stock ignition with the starter, the battery voltage sags and the spark voltage drops too. In electronic based systems they usually don't have that problem, so the spark is just as hot cranking as it is running.

Bill- I absolutely will. I'm currently in the middle of a front/rear end conversion on my 650. 2001 Buell Lightning X1 front end, 1999 Ninja 900 rear end. Here's my build:

I really like how detailed you went with your Dyna swap- I'll definitely be following suit on this one. I've had tough cold starts for a bit, so I've tuned the carbs up again, and figured a good Dyna would also help.

3-ohm green Dyna coils should work fine with the OEM electronic ignition.

650Mod, You're welcome. IMHO, the KZ650 has an undeserved reputation as being difficult to start. When I first got mine that was also the case. I needed full choke, lots of cranking and after starting a lot of warm up time before it was driveable. :( Over time and only with the knowledge, help and support of the KZRiders here I started to take control of my bikes maintenance. Now I know to a certainty that it was all the fault of incompetent maintenance by the previous owners… and me. I have seen that with proper adjustments in the proper ORDER the KZ650 can start on first crank every time and run as smooth as a sewing machine. :) Somewhere here there is a rather long, complete and SEQUENTIAL procedure as to what to do FIRST all the way to what to do LAST… it makes all the difference! B)

BTW if you have poor contacts in you handlebar switch gear change them now… or if like me you just can’t afford it now then do the less expensive (<$10.00) Coil Repowering Mod first… it saved my bike… true not all here will agree but that’s democracy for ya. :P

Can anyone out there pull up that step-by-step procedure for 650Mod and repost it here. There is also one on how to troubleshoot shorts circuits and open circuits that has that same step-by-step approach… again if anyone can repost that here it would be great.
