I have the 6 pin ignition switch, my battery doesn't charge while in the on position. Now it does charge in the park position, also the kill switch only works in this position as well. At this point, I am assuming the wiring is not soldered correctly to the pads on the switch. So it's either replace the switch or try to fix this one. Any input is greatly appreciated.

It would be very rough for a switch to cause this. I assume the motorcycle runs and the lights work? If so most likely switch is OK. You can test with a multimeter. In "on" position all 6 wires should show battery voltage with the key "on" and the lights "on". In "off" position, battery voltage on the 2 white wires, zero on the rest. In "park" battery voltage on both whites, the O/G and red, zero on Blue and Brown. Engine will not run in "park" if wired correctly so if it does, yes the switch is wired wrong.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Just notice when I removed the switch, that this a 7 pin switch for the 1980 Z1-R ( has a yellow wire added with a seperate brown wire. I was using a 1978 ignition with the 1980 with a right handlebar switch (doesn't have wiring for the headlight). So it's either find a 7 pin ignition or figure out how to wire this switch with the right hand control. If any advise, feel free, I need to ride.

I was wondering if the yellow wire from the has something to do with the headlight staying on, cause I would like to have a seperate on/off headlight switch.

Resolved Ignition Switch Issue:

Thanks to RonKZ650, I figured out how to wire the ignition
switch with his helpful info. I figured out that both the red and
yellow wiring @ the switch was on the wrong pads. Now the
bike no longer runs in park, and the kill switch is working properly. He saved me the cost of switch.

Thanks Ron

Going crazy. Bike still not charging correctly. Ran test on on all of the new electrical parts (stator, reg/rec). Cleaned all connectors and confirmed the ground.

Tested the ignition switch to confirm voltage, notice there is a big difference from battery voltage and voltage from the switch.

Battery tested @ 12.89 (standing voltage)
Ignition switch @ 12.2 (standing voltage-both brown and white wires)

Question 1 is this normal or shouldn't the voltage be the same?

Question 2 now would this cause the rec/reg not function correctly?
