I'm having issues with my starter button...when I push it, NOTHING happens...totally silent. I tried bridging the terminals with a screwdriver and it turned over. The light switch works and the rest of my electrical is fine. The bike will kickstart in about 10 kicks but the button is doing nothing. I believe the neutral safety switch is fine. Any suggestions?

Try wiring your horn directly across the battery, possibly with temporary wires... inline fuse would be wise.

If it does not honk you have a faulty horn. Replace it.

If it honks you have a switch, wiring and or connector fault. Start troubleshooting.

If you have the original Operator's Manual you will find the wiring diagram on the last page in glorious black and white. Use it for troubleshooting.

Best of success. :)

It's your wiring or start button or clutch interlock switch. :)

If the problem was the interlock switch, would I be able to bypass it somehow? or start it with the clutch lever pulled in? I'm not too familiar with it. thanks.

Yes you can bypass the switch, mine hasn't been hooked up since 77. Follow the wires back to the plug and hook the wires to each other, switch bypassed.

If it has the clutch interlock switch, then you MUST pull the clutch in to start the bike!

Well, I guess it's not the interlock switch. I tried bypassing it and still nothing...tried clutch lever in/out and every possible combination that has to do with the interlock switch.

I guess I'll attack the button itself.
Thanks for all the input by the way!

if yours still has the wires running thru the bars, get them out, you will be surprised to see all the bad spots from them rubbing.

Your problem does sound like a switch issue, but donr forget to check all the connections in thewiring harness also
