Is there a way to replace the spark plug boots and wires on my 1978 KZ650? Do I have to buy replacement coils? I just bought this really nice KZ650 and I am hooked on these old bikes. I never thought they could be so much fun. I am used to working on newer twin yamaha. Anyway, if anyone has any info to help me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

You can buy replacement plastic "boot caps" that screw into the end of the wire. The wires on the kawi OEM coils are molded into the coil. There are wire splice kits to replace the wires outside the coil body.

Z1 has the lowest prices on replacement coils.

I just installed a Dyna-S ignition on my 650 - I replaced the coils with Dyna coils at the same time - and for that very reason, the wires on the old coils are 30 years old!

It is kindof an expensive fix, but IMHO it was well worth the money - the bike runs much better with the all new system, and I don't have to worry about points anymore!

leorider, welcome to the KZR Nation. Great to have you here.

All the advise above is great... just chose the direction that works best for you situation.

Connections are a major part of ride reliability. Save yourself some/lots of time and money and do the WG Coil Repowering Mod ASAP. Don't ask. See here:

For about $10.00 USD you won't get better bang-for-the-buck.

Best of success. :)

PS
Don't forget to add your year, model and location for the best responses... and can we have a picture of your bike.
