My 82 LTD 1000 has a non-functioning speedometer, this is the electronic type with a sensor on the front hub. I took off the sensor to look at the wiring and sprayed some electrical cleaner in it and blew it out with compressed air, it did not help. My question is if this is more than likely a sensor issue or is the speedometer gauge faulty? There is a speedometer unit and a sensor on ebay, listed as separate items, should I try to get both or just the sensor? Any input would be appreciated.

I have three bikes with that speedo. Two times it was the meter, and one time a broken wire in the harness from the sensor to the meter. The wires on a second bike had broken in the past as they had been replaced with heavier wire. I would say check your wires first. Mine broke where the harness goes through the bracket on the fork leg. That is where it flexes the most...chris3
