I have a dyna s ignition on a 1980 kz1000 that I'm building a simple wiring harness for. I need to know if someone can tell me what the red wire from the Dyna s ignition runs to. I know the black and white run to the coils but I need help on the others. Thanks.

The red wire (or wires, there are actually two) is the 12V supply to the pickup coils. These red wires should be connected to a switched power supply (meaning with ignition off there should be no power on the red wire).

... and from personal experiance I would strongly suggest that the power wire be solderd and NOT crimped in place!

I "just" finished installing a Dyna-S on the 650! As stated the red wires go to a switched power source - on mine I used the yellow/red feed to the coils (I also installed Dyna coils!

PLEASE DO NOT use those bloody crimp-on insulation displacement (official name) connectors they supply with the kit. They probably have been the source of more automotive electrical problems than they have solved!

Soldered or crimped-on connectors are definately the best - and if you solder wires together, get some heat-shrink tubing over the joint!

By the way - the Dyna-S works like magic! Very happy - and a GREAT price from Z1!

Dyna S on my Z1 and KZ900 has three wires, being a single red wire (spliced into a switched ignition source), a green wire (front/right module) to one coil (firing inside plugs) and black wire (rear/left module) to the other coil (firing outside plugs). Good Luck! :)

Appearently a difference in layout between the DS2-1 for the 900/1000s and the DS2-2 for the 650/750s etc., the DS2-2 (mine at least) has two red wires going all the way through.

However, as the pickups are physically separated the single red wire on the DS2-1 also has to be split in two somewhere.

Patton, The current Dyna S for a Z1/KZ900/KZ1000 DOES NOT have a green and black set of wires (like the OEM colors). They use a black and a white wire with small plastic collars to indicate which pickup coil they go to. One wire has a green collar and the other a black. For awhile, they put some of them on backwards. I don't recall if the white wire or black wire goes to a particular coil. The other thing that needs to be done correctly is to orient the pickup magnet which is in the rotor... it is painted over and the size of a pencil eraser. with the crank at TDC for 1&4, the magnet goes to about 9 oclock when installing the rotor. If you get it on backwards, the bike will just backfire loudly when you try and start it as the firing of the coils will be 180 degrees out.

i just checked my rotor that came with my dyna-s and it was in 180* out(around 3 o-clock), i never even thought about that when i put it in. i have not tried to start the bike yet and have a issue of my coils firing when i turn on bike key.

Thanks for your help, the electrical system works great now. Just have to change out the rings on the pistons and I'll be done.

Hello. I have a question and it's along these same lines, so I thought I'd try putting it here. My bike is a 1979 KZ1000 LTD (B Model). I just installed the green 3 ohm Dyna S coils and the Dyna electronic ignition. I also installed the 7 mm copper core wires. It works fine, but my question concerns the ballast resistor. The paperwork says remove it. dumb question perhaps, but where is it? Under the tank with three wires coming from it (rectangular shaped about 1 inch long)? that's all I could find that looks like a ballast resistor. If this is it do I just unplug it? Is it bad to leave it in? I have read what they do and apparently it serves no use unless you have points. Enough dumb questions. I'll toss it if that's the correct thing to do; just making sure. The paperwork is not real clear. Thx.

I do not know where the ballast resistor is, but if you have installed 3 ohm coils, it will actually reduce their performance. When you locate it, remove it and commect the wires together (short it out). That way, your 3 ohm coils will always be seeing 12v.

Ballast resistors are normally switched into the circuit - they are typically 1.5ohms so they drop the coil voltage to 6 volts. When you start the engine, the ballast resistor is shorted out so that the 1.5ohm coil sees the full 12v giving a fatter spark to start the motor!

Personally, I have never had much use for the ballast system - if your battery, wiring, and ignition are up to par, starting should not be a problem!
