Does anybody know what thread sizes are used to hold the points to the ignition plate on a '78 KZ650-B2. As may be expected, the Phillips slots have been gouged out of several of the screws on my bike, and I cannot adjust (at the moment) one set of points. I have no problem taking off the plate, but I would like to obtain the replacement screws in advance!

Thanks guys!

4 mm / 0.7 pitch (standard coarse metric for that size) and the bolt is 7 mm long from underside of bolt head to tip.

Are you sure? I would have thought a M3 screw was used... these are .5 pitch but I could well be wrong as I have never seen the screw in question. It isn't metric by the way... it is Japanese Industrial Standard and that isn't a Phillips head it is a JIS slotted head. Buy a #1 JIS screwdriver to remove these screws and the heads won't strip be they M4 or M3. Do a search... many hobby places carry JIS screwdrivers as do places that sell tools for repairing small Japanese appliances/machines like copying machines.

George, you´re right that they are JIS, but JIS are metric too so they can be replaced with standard metric bolts. And yes, they are 4 mm / 0.7 pitch, I just checked both with a Vernier caliper and a pitch gauge.

More about JIS.

Thanks guys - I'll stop off at the hardware store on my way home and buy a collection of 4mm screws. Hopefully they will have "normal" Phillips heads - but I will look for the JIS drivers too!

Just to complicate matters, MG cars use a Phillips-like screw head called "Pozidrive"!

This means I need THREE sets of screwdrivers that all look the same!

Edit: Yep 4mm they are - picked 'em up on the way home from work - had them installed 30 minutes later!
