I have a 5 wire reg/rec 3 yellow go to stator , red wire goes to the starter relay, black/white wire was originally wired as a ground. This bike is wired up as a KZ1000 mid 70s. Now i took off the reg/rec and found a threaded screw hole in the back. My assumption was that would be the ground and the Black/white wire would go to the ignition switch. While i switched it up and now it doesnt has spark. Please help my head is spinning.

Red should go directly to the battery, and not the starter relay,if it's an aftermarket type...post a pic.

One of the contacts on any starter relay comes directly from the + side of the battery along a high current line to power the starter. maybe that's the one it's supposed to go to for picking up +12V.

When you wire directly to the battery, it makes a bit of a mess when removing or replacing the battery. The hot terminal on the solenoid is connected to the battery by the big red cable so putting the hot wire from the reg/rec on that lug makes some sense although it will work just as well on the hot terminal on the battery. Same with the ground. Any 3-wire aftermarket reg/rec with a total of 5 wires will be the hot wire as described (prolly the red wire), the black/white is prolly the ground and the yellows are stator connection wires. The reg/rec is a more modern type that senses voltage via the red wire. On your solenoid, IF you have a Kaw type KZ1000, the trigger from the starter button is a BLACK WIRE that solders on the solenoid. There is a black wire coming off many Kaw solenoids that is a ground that would hook to an OEM regulator. The two big lugs connect to the battery (and red wire from the new reg/rec) and the other big lug to the starter which grounds through its case on the frame.

So there is no wire that ties into the ignition wire? Off the brown wire there was an extra wire that didnt go anywhere looking on the diagram it looked like it had to be to the reg/rec. But you said with the 5 wire it detects voltage through the hot wire?

Correct. The later Kaw Reg/recs (78 to about 79 or 80 on the 650's) did not use the brown wire. Then, even later, Kaw went back to using them. You must have one of the middle years reg/recs.

Be sure to start the bike slowly and measure the battery voltage as you rev the bike. If it's above 15v, don't rev it anymore til you figure out what's wrong.
