Has anyone (loudhvx?) swapped the KZ550 points for oem cdi ? What is reqd. ? Could it possibly be as easy as swapping points plate for cdi plate under the engine cover ?

I've gone the other way on my 650, from points to Dyna elec, to points again and last to an '80s Kawi elec. ignition.

To go from elec to points on your 550, yes you would swap the plates, but you will also need to NOT use the IC Igniter. Just wire the points dirrectly to the coils and not through the IC Igniter.

Sorry, I think your trying to go from the points to an elec. right?

In that case, yes swap the plates but ADD an IC Igniter between the plate and coils. You may need different OHM coils as well.

I found the swap I did a few years back: Ign. swap

That was using a kz1000 elec. ign.
I'm now using one from a '80s kz650.

Check it out for some info.
You will need the advancer & cam as well.

Yep, very easy like Rstnick said. to take full advantage of the swap, you'll want hotter coils. The Kaw electronic ignition coils are about 2.5 ohms, but it works well with 3.0 ohm coils too.

Points coils are about 4 ohms and points will burn faster if you use 2.5 ohms coils with points (so it's highly NOT recommended). However, electronic ignition can use points coils, but you will actually lose a little spark energy by using points coils. The electronic ignition uses a shorter dwell in order to not overheat the hotter coils. If you use points coils, the shorter dwell will reduce the energy a little.

(This info is in regards to the oem electronic ignition. The Dyna S is a different story.)
