I'm refreshing my 80 kz1000 ltd and put in a green 3 ohm pair of dyna coils. As far as I know you keep the resistor with the points and remove it if you replace the points with a dyna-s. Is this true? will I hurt anything doing one of the other?

This is a case of Dyna knows best!

If you were just replacing the coils it would depend on the the impedance/resistance of the stock coils. I don't know the specs on the stock coils but if the total resistance of the stock set up ( Coil + Resistor) was three ohms then you don't need the resistor.

If Dyna has made allowances in their design for the resistor, you should stay with it.

You are kind of over-complicating this question. The ballast resistor is used in the wire carrying voltage to the coils. The ballast resistor is supposed to contribute 1.5 Ohms resistance and the coils are supposed to have 2.5 Ohms resistance for use with the IC Igniter ignition. This is a total of 4 Ohms. If you check your Dyna green coils, that is about the resistance level they have (they will measure between 3.2 and 3.8 Ohms. The ballast resistor will end up contributing resistance and was only meant to be used with the lower resistance OEM coils.

Measure the resistance of the ballast resistor by putting a probe on one lug where the power goes in and the other probe where it comes out. It will probably measure MUCH higher than the design 1.5 Ohms as it is ollllllld. At least that has been my experience so pitch it. Too much resistance at the coils won't help your spark any.

The Dyna S with 3-ohm coils does not need the ballast. It is designed to work without it.
