I've been battling sooty sparkplugs for awhile now in my 77 KZ1000. I even rebuilt my carbs thinking that would help. It didn't. I finally checked my voltage to my coils. Wow! I have 12V at the battery and 9.9V at the coils. After doing wiredgeorge's coil mod, I have less than .4V drop at the coils. As a bonus, I found where the kill switch had been bypassed. I hooked it back up and it works fine. When the rain stops I will try it out and see if my sparkplugs improve. It sure can't be any worse!

I had about the same voltage at my coils as you did before I did the coil power mod. Since then I replaced the coil (turns out the insulation was fried) and also did the HEI mod that is on the WG website. You should se the spark I'm getting now. Before it was just a week blue line from the electrode to the ground but now its like a small bluish white ball exploding off the electrode. Much easier to start, and better MPG too.
