I tried to start my 650 yesterday for the first time since October and all I got was clicking from the relay. (started with kickstart) I put the charger on, and the charger read that the battery was full, I tried again..no luck.
I checked it with a voltmeter and it read 12-13 volts.
The battery was new as of last August. I recharged it about 2 weeks ago and seemed fine at that time.
Is there a relay check I can make before I buy another battery?
Also, the starter did attempt once, but it only lasted about maybe a second.
If the relay is bad, can I use the one from my 79 1000?
Thanks

You can have the battery load tested if you don't have your own. Otherwise to get any useful readings with a volt meter you have to check voltage while you press the start button. Put the meter leads directly on the battery terminals and watch your volts as you press the button. If volts drop low, your battery is bad. Even many times a dead battery will still check 12v just sitting idle, but have no cranking amps. You can check your relay by jumping the 2 large terminals with a couple screwdrivers, the starter should turn.
Even a new battery can die. I have a 1993 Ford van that I put a new Motorcraft battery in back in sept, drove it 12 miles then it sat all winter. With the rediculous diesel fuel prices I thought I'd retire the truck and drive this 460 gas hog which is now "cheaper" to run than a perfectly good diesel pickup, went out and started the van, it started right up so I cover the truck. Next day go out to start the van and nothing. Voltage across terminals 0.000 volts. Charge the battery, 0.000 volts. Now that's a dead battery. So back on the KZ650 to work I go.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I know it's spring when a bunch of battery questions start to pop up. :cheer:

Glad you got it fixed!
