i got a new bike to day it is a 1982 750 kz shaft starter was turen slow to a stop with a little smoke coming of the starter but i did get it so start and drove it ran great i thought it was because the battray was bad because it would not hold a charge so i got a new batray and charged it on my 1.5 amp charger for 5 h and the batray has a full charg and i put it in and the start is still tureing slow and has some smoke comming out of it could it be wet?

thats the magic smoke that leaves when electrical parts fail.

my best guess is the starter will need to be rebuilt or replaced, and congrats on the new bike

Get used to kicking it started, or park heading downhill for a while (to compression start it) 'til you replace that starter.

i would pull the starter still and dissasemble it. then i would douche it with electrical parts cleaner and get all the gunk out of it, off the armmature and install new brushes, check all the solder joints (repair as needed) and reassemble it and be happy.
But thats just me and liking to know that my starters will turn when buttons are pressed.

Congrats on the new toy.
