Wow my 1st post!

Anyway, I have a 91 Zephyr ZR 750 that's cutting out. After trying all of the tips and tricks, I've isolated the issue to the pickup coil or igniter box.

The reason why I'm here is I would like to mount a Dyna 2000 complete ignition to the bike so I can get out of this electrical nightmare. My 750 engine should be the same as the KZ's of yesteryear. My question is this: Has anyone here tried to fit a dyna ignition to a newer air cooled 8 valve engine?

I'm not sure if the rotor and plate will fit. Jeff at Z1 wasn't sure either and suggested I post here.

Thanks in advance!

Looking at your photos that appears to be the same ignition setup Kaw used on the 83 to 85 GPZ 750 as well as I believe some of the 550's as well. You might try looking up the part numbers for your ignition parts on the Kaw site and then click on the yellow question mark icon to see what other bikes used that part.

Edit: Well shoot I just went and looked up your pulser coil and it shows that as being unique to the 750 Zephyr. About the only bit of info I could glean from that little exercise was to determine that it uses the same point cover gasket as the 550/650/700/750's do so from a physical size standpoint the ignition unit from like a 750 KZ should fit.

There is a Zephyr website possibly someone over there might be able to easily answer your question. I'm just not familiar enough with your bike to be able to be of much help to you. Here is a link to that site www.zephyr-zone.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl

Thanks for the info..I checked the PN's too..totally different.
Zephyr Zone doesn't have much info in this regard, but I'll try some other searches.

Can anyone take a look at the last pic of the crank and tell me if that looks the same as the old KZ or GPZ 750?

It looks like they both use a similar locating pin for the rotor.

Looking at the end of the crank in the pic they appear to be the same as does the location of the oil sending unit. I don't have a set of calipers to measure the mounting screw locations or I would. They do look to be the same though. I'm sure somebody will be along soon that can measure for you. Wish I could be of more help.

I agree with Gringo, it does appear to be the same as the 83-85 GPz750. I can tell you that the KZ750 ignition will bolt right on the GPz750.

I have a doctor's appointment in a couple of hours, but I'll get the measurements off a GPz750 motor when I get back, if no one else has done so by then.

The Dyna catalog says the Dyna S DS2-2 fits all the 550/650/750 fours.

www.dynaonline.com/english/catalogs.htm

Contact Dyna directly and ask if the Dyna 2000 will fit your bike. It's a free call :)

Ok I called them. The tech said it wouldn't work, but the reason wasn't clear. Something to do with "spacing". I'm not sure I buy this. So if anyone can get those measurements, I'd appreciate it.

I'm at the end of a long road with this bike. I just had a 810 kit put in and BSR34 MM carbs from Wired George. I need to get this ignition working as the last piece of the puzzle.

Thanks in advance for the help!:)

I did just think of something after looking at your last post. Providing that it will bolt up you are going to have to locate a mechanical advancer unit in order to use the dyna unit. Your current ignition setup does not have one. I wouldn't put too much stock in what their tech says.....kind of like calling computer tech support and getting connected to India. As long as the plate will bolt up and you get an advancer my gut feeling says you will be OK.
