Hi Guys

I am placing a 77 engine in a 79 MKII frame. I noticed the alternator's are different for each engine. As per the manual the 3 wire connection wiring and voltage output is the same but the regulator is different.

Q: Can I use the 77 alternator without changing any other wiring or electrical components?

If I have to convert to the 79 stator (dynamo)

Q: Will the 79 stator bolt on the 77 crank?

The stator will not interchange between the two models. The MKII shouldh have what they call a "big end crank". The snout for the stator is much bigger than the snout on the earlier models.

I don't see why you couldn't wire it up the same. Perhaps someone who has done the swap can chime in...

I have been called a "big end crank" myself... You need to keep your old 3 wire wound stator from the 77 engine. It has three wires which will be all yellows or a pink, blue and yellow... anyway, these are three AC legs. On the 77, there is a separate reg/rec and the stator wires plug into a blue plug on the "patch panel" on the left side of the bike under the left side cover... the plug tees to both the reg and rec units. On the MK II the stator also has 3 wires but I THINK these plug in directly to the reg/rec (combo unit).
