i messed up the order of the plug wires, according to the wiring diagram the order is supposed to be 1,4,2,3

Is this from standing from behind the motor?

Each coil has 2 spark leads. One coil feeds 1&4, and the other feeds 2&3. So you have a 50/50 shot of getting it right by purely guessing.

Are the wires still attached to the coils? If so, then you should be able to figure it out by the length of the wires.

According to the wiring diagram for a 76 900 A, the coil with the small green wire to it is the one that feeds 1&4. The coil with the small black wire to it is the one that feeds 2&3. That's probably the best way to determine it.

Sitting on the bike the leftmost cylinder is number one, last cylinder on the right is number four.

I thought the black wire was attached to the 1/4 coil. The 1/4 coil plug wires go to the one and four spark plugs. The 2/3 coil is attached with a green lead and the plug wires go to the two and three plugs respectively.

I thought so too, so I was surprised to see this factory diagram for the 76 900 A4:
kzrider.com/component/option,com_docman/...ew/gid,92/Itemid,49/

Diagrams have been known to be wrong, but this is sort of a BIG error. Just curious, does your factory diagram show this same error, WG?

I'd like to put a correction in my copy if this can be confirmed. I think you have a 900 A4, if I'm not mistaken.

Here's what I see on the diagram:

On the 76 (and most any of the 903/1015 with points), the green wire comes from the right hand points and that is the 2/3 points. The Clymers manual shows the green wire firing the 3 and 4 plugs if that makes this any clearer and has a black lead from the points to some connector on the way but that is not correct either. I think most all Kaws use green for 2/3 and black for 1/4 for their four cyl. bikes. The leads on the electronic ignition model aren't green and black coming off the pickup coils (can't recall what colors) but coming out of the IC Igniter, they use green for 2/3 and black for 1/4. You can go the other way by swapping the rotor around I think... at least you can with a Dyna S... In other words, if you screw up the leads to the coils and wires to the plugs using a Dyna S and are just lazy, you can pull off the black rotor on the mechanical advance and set it 180 off to compensate. Also, I will have a look at the KZ1000 and my KZ900 manual and check the wire colors. I keep those in the shop. I have a bunch of Clymers and keep one in my office. Of course, they don't actually mark the plugs so it could be a mis-assumption on my part that they are supposed to be ordered as they are shown in the wiring diagram... they are ordered in the factory wiring diagrams but there are no numbers on them in the Clymer. It appears that one coil fires 1 and 2 and the other 3 and 4. Go figger.

Nah, if your wires are numbered already 1-4, sitting on the bike going left to right it should be 1-4, 1 all the way on the left and four all the way on the right, I think.
