The Part numbers for the wiring harness for the 78 b2
and the 78 sr are not the same, so they are not identical. They are, however, very similar, and would probably work without much modification.

Yep -- a pretty horrible prospect all right.

As already known, among other chassis differences, the B2 has a duck tail whereas the SR does not, and according to Kawasaki.com the two models do not share the same main wiring harness.

Concurring with POPTOP, would guess the two harnesses are basically the same, including matching connectors and color codes, but with a few different length wires serving the same purpose. For example, wiring to the brake/tail light might be longer or shorter depending on the model. Further guessing that the "longer" wires would fit okay, but that the few "shorter" wires, if any, may require an in-line extension.

Others here being far better informed will know for sure.

And almost afraid to ask -- what's wrong with the existing harmess? [Oops, just noticed the avatar which may answer the question.]

Good Luck! :)

heh, the avatar is another project. i re-aquired this bike, the kz, after 10 years from the dude i sold it to. he let it sit, butchered the wiring and never even registered it! 10 years later i bump into him and buy it back and it only has 10 miles more than the last time i saw her. guess it's first bike love.

thanks much for the info, you guys rock.

A couple of differences come to mind. One would be the SR will have a a pig tail for the fuel sensor where the B does not. Also on the early B models they did not have 4 way flashers where the SR did. I'm not 100% on the 78 650 B's not having them but I know the 77's didn't however the 79 I have does. I also don't remember if the 78 models had the on and off switch still for the headlamp. None of this stuff should stop it from working though, most of the really important stuff will be the same. If you can find a good unmolested harness from an SR I'd have to say that would be better than having to re-make your own harness.

The link above gets you some wiring diagrams in color.

I see a fuel sensor and a warning light self-checker on the D1, not on the B2, as Gringo said. Both models have headlight on-off switches and Hazards.

Very interesting. The '77 KZ650B1 doesn't have the "hazard" switch but the '77 KZ650C1 does. According to the wiring diagrams the '78 KZ650B2 and later versions do have the switch. I didn't know I got this futuristic feature when I bought my C1 in April, 1977. I learn something everyday on this site. Ed
