After going through my 1982 KZ1000 I found the only problem I could with the bike ! The chain, clutch, engine, body is perfect. Except for the speedometer. Enclosed is a picture. I noticed the screw that holds the face in the speedo came loose and is laying towards the bottom of the speedo case. (you can see it in the picture on the bottom by the oil light)Im going to have to take apart the gauge and re-install the screw on the left side of the speedo where is came out. :) Im really enjoying this bike and Im getting a lot of looks with it riding around. I think I opened the case on my old 750 speedo, Im gonna have to open up this one and replace the screw, bike will be in perfect condition after that. Im so glad I didnt let this 1000 get away from me.

Perfect? Perfect? Your bike is idling at 1500 rpm and the fuel tank is almost empty! Don't you know it will rust!

Freakin' bike is in so much better shape than mine I had to bitch about something..... :P

I came from work today and tried to take the case apart from the speedo to get to the screw. How do I take the case apart ? I see a metal ring that seems to be holding the 2 halfs together but I dont want to damage the speedo trying to get to it under the glass.

Danny, I tried to do a search for it here at KZR but could not find it. There is an article on how to do it. Someone else will find it for you. Yes, you have to remove the ring and then reinstallit. I did mine but it don't look so good. The repair involves bending the ring open and then using a coffee can to compress it closed (confused?) or splitting the ring where it's not seen. Someone will chime in...

I took my speedometer apart several months ago and did have to pry the ring up (bend it all the way around) and then bend it back down when I was done with fixing it (and cleaning) I went by the archives article

kzrider.com/archive/viewthread.php?tid=8772#pid173759

The ring looked *almost* as good as before from the top but had some scratches. I could probably have been more careful to avoid that though.

I did the search also. I will check Jeffs site. I know last year when I had my 750 I was able to bend the old type ring and get in there. I had it stored in my favorites for a long time and deleted it.

Thanks
