I'm pretty sure you can mount them any way you like....just as long as they are reasonably well shielded from the elements and not subject to excessive heat... like maybe strapped to an exhaust pipe :P
Horizontal, vertical wont make any difference.

Some bikes like the 1300 have them under the seat.

Be sure to post a picture of the finished tank

as long as they are not oil filled, you will be fine
and i mean upside down, oil filled, they will leak. but if you have a more stock motorcycle coil, you are OK

Am well pleased with these on Z1 and KZ900 (with 3 ohm coils):

Dyna 3 ohm coils

Dyna plug wires

Dyna has other coils with different ohm usage, so be sure you get the coils with the correct ohms for your particular bike. All available at Z1E. :)

Ditto to what flht1997 and Patton said. With Dyna's (not oil filled) you can orient them any way you want.

Yet having said that, I would still try to orient the Dyna’s with the HiVoltage leads pointing down to make them more resistant to water/rain penetration. If down is not possible then I would try to orient the Dyna’s to have the HiVoltage leads point towards the rear of the bike for the same reason (that's how I did it). ;)

I am sure many have been installed them opposite to my recommendations and they have worked just fine, but I prefer not to fight nature or the laws physics more often than necessary. Why? Don't ask...

Best of success!
