Hi everyone. I have a 1980 KZ650E LTD and will probably soon convert to electronic ignition with the DYna S. I was wondering though, could I take a pulse coil and igniter from a newer bike and make it work on mine?

Thanks for any info. You don't know how much i have learned from this site since I got this bike last fall.

Yes you can.

Check out the link in my signature: KZ1000 electronic Ign.

If you use one out of a later model 650 or 750, you don't have to make the backing plate smaller like I had to.

yup. i used stock kawasaki stuff i pieced together off ebay with 750 pick-up, ignitor and accel coils, i got everything for about half of the dyna kit. it takes a bit to wire it all up, but it works perfect.

I did it to mine too. Remember you will need the electronic models' advancer unit too, or at least the lobe part to slip on your points model advancer. I have 550 pulse coils, and 750 igniter, a lobe off a 650.

The hardest part for me was studying a wiring diagram from an electronic model bike to make sure I had everything wired right, but it's not a big deal overall. Probably paid $70 for everything but you can get the parts cheaper on ebay.

You canmake the ignitor yourself if you want:

But you still need the pickups and the rotor for the advancer.

i was all ready to make one of your GM hei ignitors Lou, but it just happened to look at ebay one more time and someone had a ignitor with a 9.95 buy it now. when it goes i will make one of yours.
is the dyna-s really any better than the kawasaki stuff? cause it seems pretty pricey for just an ignition system

Thanks for the info. I have one more question though.
When the pulse coil goes on, do you set the timing similar to setting up a Dyna or is there no adjustment at all?

when i put mine on there is/was no adjustment the screw hole are not slotted like the points plate, it just screwed on. when i checked the timing it was pointing at the "F" mark at idle and went to the other line when i revved it to 2500 rpms, so i called it good and put the cover on. i know some of the other early 80's kawi' stuff had electronic advance also which would add another element to get working. i just took my time on ebay and eventually every thing came cheap. sometimes ignitors will go for 100 dollars and the next time they dont get a bid. it is weird.

Lou has posted previously that in his opinion the stock KZ electronic ignition is better, and I agree.

I just scored a 650 pickup for $25! Hopefully it will come with the cam lobe to trigger the coils. Looks like I'm going to build that igniter unless ebay has a steal.
