the easiest way to tell - measure the ID on the engine side - 26mm will measure around 26.7mm, 28mm carbs measure around 28.8mm
Z1's used an earlier VM28 carb - easily distinguished by the angular top held on with just 2 screws.
KZ900 and most of the 77-78 KZ1000's used 26mm carbs - only the Z1R used 28mm carbs. None of these used accelerator pumps - and all had adjustable needles with 5 clip settings.
It gets a little more confusing in 79/80. The A model, the Z1R and the shaft bikes all used 28mm carbs. The 79 LTD used 26mm carbs - I'm not 100% sure on the 80 LTD or the police bikes.

Yeah I knew about that page, but he doesn't talk about the KZ1000 VM28's.

Aren't the "later" VM28s basically bored out VM26s from the 900/1000s equipped with the better linkage?

They look almost identical other than the accel pump, so that's a possibility.

I am not in any way going to stand up as a carb expert - my knowledge comes mostly from what I have read. And this suggest that smootbores are only desireable for racing since they do not carburate as well as normal carbs during small throttle openings, nor at lower revs. So for street riding, chances are that you'll be much happier with a set of 26 or 28 mm standard piston carbs.

you may not be a carb expert but i think you nailed it
yes rare race carbs are cool
yes they look cooler then shit
yes they deliver more horsepower
yes they cost more coin
theyre like a beautiful woman that will do it all
but happens to be crazy as a bag of farts
will you keep going back?
depends on you intentions i reckon

My experience, again, my experience is with smoothebores is the 29's are absolutely the smoothest through the entire range of any carb I have ran, from idle up, even on an almost stock 750. The 33's run GOOD! but you have to be awake when you have them, they will bog if not in a sweet spot. 33's don't have the greatest street manors but the 29's do. Like I said, my experience!

Ok I'm gonna chime in here, not sure what cams you are gonna run in that 810, I spent most of last summer tryin to make some RS34s work on my 810 with 118 web cams, thought it was a carb problem, turns out the engine got warm and the cams were loadin up and foulin the plugs. I put stock 650 cams in the engine and the rs 34s run just fine.
