I don't think they will be the correct height.... Would it make a difference?

 height??

Holes in a carb holder must match mounting studs on the engine head (center-to-center distance between studs should equal center-to-center distance between holes in carb holder).

Inside diameter of the holder must be sufficiently adjustable in order to snugly tighten around the outside diameter of the carb.

 What is center-to-center distance on the bike at hand (to compare with the information furnished in the ad)?

Also, notice the center-to-center line of the mounting holes is offset by 3mm from the center of the bore. (in the diagram I posted)

Wonder how tall are the oem carb holders?

Wonder if the ebay carb holder has sufficient distance between the mount holes (appears to need an additional 1.3 mm), or enough material to elongate each hole?

Wonder if the ebay holder has the needed 3mm offset below center-line between mount holes?

Unfortunately, the drawings of Mikuni's offerings appear not to have the needed 3mm offset below center-line between mount holes.

Any details available as to diy construction of the metal flange?

And source/type of sufficiently large "heater" hose?

Good Fortune! :)

Reviving this thread since I'm now working on a couple of early Kz400's.
I'm simultaneously trying to get a 75 D2 and 77 D4 up and running. Both were very cheap and in rough condition.

I'm revisiting the differences between the early motors with piston CV carbs and the early motors with diaphragm CV carbs.
They use different carb holders and I also notice a slight difference in the head casting. I'm not sure the head casting difference exactly correlates to the different carb types or not. (As opposed to the later style motors which all used diaphragm CV carbs.)

I can't find any precise measurements for the diaphragm-CV carb holders. So that will be one of my first steps. I can then add that to my other graphic.

When I get a few photos and maybe a vid, I'll post them in a project thread.

These might not be the final versions, but I thought I'd post what I have so far.
I will post a note if I change this info.

"Plate" refers to the racking plate the carbs are attached to.
Diaphragm carbs did not use a plate, they used steel-angle brackets.

Old-style motor:
1974 (D1) (Standard) : piston CV with plate, using 16065-037

1975 D(2) (Standard) : piston CV with plate, using 16065-037
1975 S(1) (Special) : piston CV with plate, using 16065-037

1976 D3 (Standard) : piston CV with plate, using 16065-037
1976 S2 (Special) : piston CV with plate, using 16065-037

1977 A1 (Deluxe) : piston CV with plate, using 16065-037
1977 D4 (Standard) : diaphragm CV no plate, using 16065-048
1977 S3 (Special) : diaphragm CV no plate, using 16065-048

1978 A2 (Deluxe) : diaphragm CV no plate, using 16065-048

New-style motor:
1978 B1 (Standard) : diaphragm CV no plate, using 16065-1002
1978 C1 (Special) : diaphragm CV no plate, using 16065-1002

1979 B2 (Standard) : diaphragm CV no plate, using 16065-1002
1979 H1 (Ltd) : diaphragm CV no plate, using 16065-1002

This port diagram and holder diagram applies to the older-style motor only.
If someone wants to confirm the bolt angle through actual measurement, that would be great. Calculations can be off more than actual measurements.

Here's something curious that I've noticed. The early style motors have at least two different head castings. The main difference is how the carb-holder boss is cast into the head. Another slight difference is the valve-lash window plug. Some motors have a very large hex while others have a smaller hex. But I can find the smaller hex on both types of head castings. I don't think the differences affect anything functionally. Maybe Nebr_Rex knows otherwise.
