TOPIC:

Been working on my 81 CSR for a bit now, and is finally running albeit roughly and on two cylinders (2/3). I've determined that there is no spark to either spark plug but fuel and air are good. I first determined the two cylinders not running from exhaust not hot, and horrid running from startup. Half the time the bike won't even start past warming up, and requires a good bit of choke if it does feel like running that day.

Things done so far:

• New spark plugs gapped to spec
• Compression check...150 across all cylinders (cold)
• Cleaned carbs and bench tuned
• Swapped right (1/4) coil, still no spark including new plug wires
• New vacuum tubing and hoses
• New battery; holds charge appropriately
• Followed wiring to ensure connections together; no major damage to wiring harness

I suspect something like a short between the ignition and the line to the coil, but not experienced with wiring so didn't want to dig in right yet without some opinions. I also checked the ignition behind the cover and everything looks brand new...bike has 9k miles so I suspect it hasn't had too much abuse. There's also a grounding wire attached to a nut near the battery under the seat, but no wires attached. Does anybody know what that's for? I didn't see any loose wires hanging or connected to anything, so figured it might have been an added on connection, but wasn't sure. If there's any other ideas about what it could be, your info is greatly appreciated.

I'll double check em, but I checked em when I first got it and they were within tolerance per the original service manual.

Edit: I also checked the fuses which all look good. No other electrical issues present...all lamps, signals, horn, etc. work.

Could be an ignitor issue.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNess makes sense (as usual). If you've already ruled out plugs, wires, and ignition coils - which it seems you have - the next potential culprits are the igniter and pickup coils. The tables below shows the correct resistance measurements for testing your igniter and pickup coils.





It just so happens, there's a pretty cheap igniter available on ebay right now if you find out you need it:

I'll definitely go run through the tests tomorrow if I have time. Thanks for pointing out that igniter...gonna try to bid although hopefully it doesn't go up in price too much.

So I got the new igniter off ebay, and that did the trick! Still have a lot to go in terms of getting her running like a clock, but all the primary systems are up and running without hiccup. Thanks for the help!
