It's called a bottoming tap and you can find lots of them but you are not going
to find one that cuts the threads for a helicoil. without paying out the ass.
I've been using Helicoil's for about 40 years and have F'ed up a BUNCH
learning how to do them right.

At $35 a tap, it gets expensive quick.

Another possible option is to use an 8mm stud.

I agree --- an 8mm stud would be at the bottom of the list. The exhaust holder nuts don't require much torque, so the other repair options ought to be good.

Sorry for the thread drift, but if anyone has found a reasonable alternate source for the Kawasaki 6mm x 27mm stud please share. I need three. One issue I'm finding is that some companies spec studs like these by how much sticks out after install (this is how Kawasaki denotes the studs), but others list the overall length. At any rate, if anyone found a good source please let me know.

You may want to ask these folks for their specs on their 6mm x 27mm studs. Ed

Assuming you mean a source other than the Kawasaki dealer, Z1Enterprises.com carries them.

Z1Ent --- exhaust studs

Z1Ent --- Exhaust Stud 6x27 Kawasaki --- 92004-066 --- $2.61 Ea

Yeah, checked out Z1 but they are out of stock and on the other side of the country from me.

Think I'm going to order from McMaster-Carr. A little price but good quality alloy steel and I can get them tomorrow.
