valve adjustment

I am having trouble identifying the alignment marks for the intake cam that you align with the lip of the head prior to measuring the gap between the valve shim and the cam lobe. For the exhaust side they are clearly visible. Does anyone have any pics that might help me?

The safest way is to have the cam pointing 180* away from the cam follower. I do it when the two cams are pointing away from each other. TDC for that cylinder, that way I can adjust both at the same time.

I do it that way too but, I also have noticed there are spots on the lobe that have another .001" more clearance then when measured at 180degrees. I don't know why or if that just happens to be what happens to these cams after 2 and half billion revolutions.

Loose cam bearing tolerances. I was taught setting them this way assures proper valve timing.

So you place each cam lobe 180 from the follower then measure gap 1 at a time? I wanted to add a picture but I can't seem to do so

I do it this way. One lobe pointing forward and the intake pointing aft. TDC for that cylinder.

Just did it and that works fine. Exhaust clearances were the same as I measured using the maintain manual and now I have the intake values also. Thanks for the help. I need to order a few shims any recommendations?

I've been getting my shims from jetsrus, Z1E may have them but seem to be out of stock often, you might try a local bike shop the just works on all brands. You may be able to trade plus $5.
