exhaust gasket

i bought a mac exhaust (next time i'll buy something that looks good :)) and a set of exhaust copper gaskets ..

now - since there was no gaskets on the bike with the old exhaust ..... which way do i mount these gaskets ?
one side is flat the other got a "bulge" - i sorta think that the bulge needs to go against the engine so the the pipes from the exhaust got as much to press against as possible flattening the gasket against the engine ..

am i totally off thinking this - and if/if not - is there anything else i should do while i'm at it ?

sry for being a noob about this :)

You stated there were no gaskets on the bike? I bet they are still on there and you missed them. They get THIN and FLAT and look just like the wall of the cylinder head. You often have to poke the edges with a dental pick to pry them off/out. I doubt it matters a lot which way you install the new crush gaskets. I probably do install the flat side towards the engine because I use a bead of grease to hold the gaskets in the well in the cylinder head while fitting the new pipe and the flat surface allows the grease to stick onto the crush gaskets a bit better.

the grease tip was nice as i was wondering how i was going to make them stick. also good advise to check for the old ones. and i guess it would make sense doing it with the flat side in as you say BS.

heartfelt thank you to you both from rainy Bergen, Norway :)

A while ago, I read someone's comment here that you should not use grease to hold the exhaust gaskets. They said to use something like polishing compound instead. I asked why, and never got a response. I've always used grease without any problems.

Anyone know why some people advise against it?
