440 Turbo ?
02 Jan 2007 16:17
Ok ! I am a crazy-a$$ ol'man. I am thinkin' of turnin' my kz440LTD belted into a turbo- I love the things. I put one into a Toyota 4 cyl. Motorhome and like the silly rush when I stomp the go pedal. Anyone got any advice on doing this short of buying a 1100 c.c. machine. Stock sucks- right ?

You are a sick man. I love it. Anything can be done. I have never seen it done before but I gues that's part of the appeal of doing it. As long as the turbo was not putting out too much boost then it should not be a problem.

There was a turbo 250 on here awhile back, so it is possible to turbo something small. make sure to get a proper waste gate and a blow off valve so it wont turn into a grenade

How do you get enough air flow to spin the turbo? I guess run like a 1" diameter turbo? I had a turbo on a KZ650 and it was rediculous as it took 5 seconds to get the turbo spinning to get any power even at 9000 rpms. That ended my turbo days except for the mistake of buying a Z1R-tc.

Not fond of turbos Ron? What did you have on your 650? It doesnt sound like it was the proper one for the application.

The Seca Turbo I had came with the smallest turbo unit in the world at the time, and the fan wasn't much bigger than 1". I don't know who made it or where you'd find another one, but one like that would probably work on a 440. Or you could take one from an old CX500 Turbo...

I don't remember much about it, but it was supposedly made just for the KZ650. This was many years ago, I think 1981. All I remember was trying to mount the stupid single metal inlet plate (whatever it's called across all four intakes on the head and finding it would not seal because the plate was not perfectly flat. A few days sanding the plate flat manually solved that problem, then it ran pretty good once boost set in which was about 5 seconds lag at 9000 rpms. I used that turbo for a "long" time on that bike, all of 1 week maybe, before I was very happy to get the piece of crap off there. Not being smart by that point I always lusted for a Z1R-TC so bought one of them with only 800 miles on it. I sold it with maybe 850. Enough of this crap, I'll keep my turbo diesel, never again on gas, just doesn't work at all.
It's really not the turbo probably to blame, it's all aftermarket garbage, and yes, that's what it all is is garbage. Anything add on never fits or works right ever. I always laugh at these sunday morning car and truck shows where they add this crap and it works. Wonder how?

thats funny, the aftermarket stuff Im familar with always works fine. I bet the car and truck show guys get their stuff to work because: 1 they are trained professionals. 2 they have the best tools. 3 they know which products are good, and which are the "garbage products" you seem to have had the bad bad luck of getting in the pastIt's really not the turbo probably to blame, it's all aftermarket garbage, and yes, that's what it all is is garbage.
