I spent a good 2 hours just staring in bewilderment at the wiring, new, old, cut, shorted, melted, you name it. I did not have the sack to chop it out, thought I would sleep on iy one more night. though long and hard about the recommendations to start the bike first, but with my lack of diagnostic skills, I figure new wiring will significantly reduce the troubleshooting possibilities.

Thanks Guys, more next weekend!

Cheers,

The first one is your regulator/rectifier. It deals with the power/voltage of your electrical system. Someone else may be better at explaining its purpose.
The second one... I don't know... A doorbell button??? ;Kidding of course. ;)

Thanks man, it could be a doorbell, seems to be the only thing missing from all the wiring. these old cop bikes sure carry a lot of wiring...

Just wild guessing, but the 2nd one might be the reserve lighting unit (that automatically switches to high bean at slightly lower voltage if the low bean fails.)

Could perhaps i.d. the particular component by the wire colors as shown in a wiring diagram.

Good Fortune! :)

If it were me I'd build the 78 parts bike. It will be easier to sell shd./when the time comes. The police bike looks pretty rough from what I see. You can get an easier selection of parts for the 78 on line than the 80's cop bike. The carbs shd work on either motor (if they are clean)(they shd be 26mm, if there 28mm there off a Z1). Get a compression gauge and see if your in spec. with both motors. Pull the valve covers and post some pics if you can. Don't buy a Dyna 2000 as the other fellows mentioned, spend your money wisely as it will take a fair amount to get it on the road. Your better off getting a repopped wiring harness on-line (it will save you big time head aches). There are a lot of guys on the board with tons help if you get stuck. Keep us posted. Doug

I appreciate the input Zedone. The cop bike actually looks OK to me, bit of rust and corrosion, but all superficial. The plan is to bust it all to bits, powder the frame, rewire from scratch (much simpler) do a full inspection on the engine, chrome bits and pieces and put her back together. Easy right?.............

I know Im biting off a lot, especially as a novice, but no one has ever accused me of half assing anything. I am breaking her into sub projects, they are, the wiring, the engine, fuel, body and brakes. Each a section. This is how it is in my head right now, time will tell. One thing for sure is there is a ton of knowledge and helpful people here. Cheers,

Stick with the plan you just laid out. With the wiring the way it is, buying a replacement set is a no brainer. Even if you don't use some of the leads, you will be way happier.

I have a 85 KZ-P and the wiring is irritating at best. Buy cheap and buy twice. Buy correct and you will have money well spent. Most of the crucial wiring in mine is hard and cracked, hacked up, missing, etc. If I wasn't using it constantly to do escorts, I would re-wire the whole thing.

Motorscot - this is brilliant, as we would say in Australia - 'Straight to the pool room'. The earliest model however is the 1982P, can I assume they were the same as the 1980?

Only one drama, this bolt sheared off, I woudll have to guess it is probably the worst bolt on the entire bike to shear....

So off to the powdercoaters this week. Does anyone have and suggestions for powdercoaters in the Seattle area?
