Hi all,

I'll apologize now, if this has been covered already in the forum, I couldn't find it/didn't have the patience to search page by page to check.

I have a 1979 KZ650C that is in need of some work. I know it's been messed with parts wise, but I'm trying to fix it up. I bought the Clymer manual with the hope of starting to do some work on it, first major mechanical work I was going to rebuild the carbs. However, mine look like this:

and not like the OEM diagrams for a 79 KZ650:

Can someone tell me A) what the arm & lever attached to the bottom of the 2nd carb is for? and B) what model bike these carbs came from? I'd love to know what I'm working with, lol

And I'll honestly take any other thoughts, advice, and/or guidance you all have.

Thanks!

The arm is attaeched to the accelerater pump that´s squits some extra fuel into the intake ports when you twist the throttle grib to faten up the air/fuel ratio.

The carbs you show are correct for the 1979 KZ650. The image in the link you gave shows earlier carbs. The 1979 KZ650 carbs came with the accelerator pump - that arm and lever you mentioned. I strongly suggest you get a Kawasaki Service Manual that covers your exact year and model bike. It will be much more accurate than relying on online images, and will provide you with tons of important information on how to properly maintain your bike. One such manual is Kawasaki Part Number 99924-1007-03 which includes information for the 1979 KZ650-C3 (US model). Ed

According to Partzilla, those pumper carbs were used on the 1980 650 E-1, LTD.

The best source is the Kawasaki Service Manual which is where I got my info. I'm sure that many of the parts places rely on the Kawasaki site drawings so any mistake there is repeated. For sure those pumpers were used in 1979 on the KZ650. Ed

For sure. It is really a shame that Kawasaki made such a mess of their online parts info.

That's the truth! Their old system was great and provided loads of accurate and useful information. The new system is hardly worth using. I can't imagine who at Kawasaki agreed to abandon the old system. They really screwed up when they did. Ed

The current OEM fishe shows the pumper carbs application on the '79 650. It's not definitive on application though. www.partzilla.com/catalog/kawasaki/motorcycle/1979/kz650-b3

Regarding the pumps, it adds a good deal to the complexity of the carbs and repair parts don't seem to be available. Bummer for anyone working on a set.

Kawasaki.com is missing the CARBURETORS/ACCELERATOR PUMP diagram.
Partzilla is showing all 3 carburetor diagrams for the 1979 KZ650-C3.
Don't buy any carburetor kits or gaskets until you've verified what you're got. You may only need rubber parts & gaskets.
Some carb kits have brass parts that aren't the same as oem.

Each carburetor has a ball, weight, clip & o-ring. The K&L accelerator pump kit has the little parts plus the 2 diaphragms. some carburetors don't need the triangular vacuum sensor diaphragm, but the 79 650C probably does. Some metric nitrile o-ring kits have the small o-rings or a size that's close enough >> the o-rings fit onto the base of the pump nozzles located at the gasket mating surface of each carb body.

The nozzles project into the carburetor bore. Test the accelerator pump by supplying fuel, then vigorously twisting the throttle pulley >> fuel should squirt straight thru without hitting the carb bore walls.

When removing the little clips, they can go flying >> so either work in a place where the clips can be easily retrieved, or do the job under some sort of hood or something, such as a large box with one side open for repair access.

Do not remove the pump rod nut, unless absolutely necessary. From a warning in the 81 manual, pump rod damage could occur.
Before removing the nut, measure & note the exposed end of the rod so that the nut can be reinstalled in the correct location.

I believe the pump was a band aid in order to run the off-idle mix a little leaner. I think you can just rejet richer and eliminate the pump. But you would have to do some research to rejet it. Others here have done that, at least on the 1000 with the accelerator pump.

Been a bit quiet for awhile, but I just wanted to say thanks to everyone.

Ed - I did find a KZ650C service manual, fantastic advice. Well worth the $30 on ebay.

Finally did get the carbs cleaned and running as smooth as I can without other major work. Tried returning the jets and needles to OEM recommendations and then realized it wouldn't work as I still have pods (got an airbox on ebay, but still need to order the boots (easy to find) and find a cap (neigh impossible)).

Thanks again, everybody!
