Does anyone know of any shop that is able to remove the stock mufflers from my '79 650SR and then remove, replace, refresh, and/or repack the muffling material and then replate the chrome on the mufflers so I can preserve the stock mufflers? If you know of a shop anywhere in the lower 48 states I would be most appreciative. Thanks.

I could be wrong but there should be no "packing" inside. It should be all mechanical baffles, never wear out other than rust. Any good chrome shop can replate them...

Bluemeanie:

Thanks for the info! Now "for the rest of the story." what do you mean by a "good chrome shop?" Do you know of any good chrome shops and where are they? Even if they are in California let me know. As long as we are dialoging, do you know of any good suspension shops? I am planning on modernizing the suspension on the '79 KZ 650 and would like to take the bike into such a shop and have them completely update the suspension. I would do so if I knew of such a place, or is such an update merely a matter of buying aftermarkets shocks and springs, installing them, and crossing my fingers? I am looking for a place that specializes in suspension. Thank you so much!

Hey Mr. db,
You'll need more than a good chrome shop to get your exhaust system re chromed. Every shop that I've spoken to refuses to touch any pipe that may have carbon deposits hidden inside. The problem is that the carbon fouls the electrolyte, ruining it for the next project. I can only suggest that you do your best to polish em up. There are several manufacturers that are making replacement systems that are good knockoffs, though I believe only for the most popular bikes.

Good Luck

That is first time I have seen the stock SR criss cross pipe set for sale. They really don't look as good as mine it doesn't appear..unless they clean up well.Pretty pricey on the shipping too as you say JM. OUCH :pinch:

Mine are blued and the left muffler has some spots where battery acid took off the chrome but I can live with it for now. If I decide to spend money on exhaust it's going to be a 4-1 pipe. The ONLY thing I don't like about that is that it takes away the balanced look..I know it sounds kind of nit picky but I like the way it looks ..pipes on both sides. But I sure do like to hear that 4-1 sound!:woohoo:

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the inputs. From the sounds of it, I think I'll just look for a replacement set of mufflers and forget replating the stock mufflers. Instead, I'll concentrate on upgrading the suspension, which almost than anything else directly affects the day-to-day feel of the bike. Anyone know of a suspension shop? Thanks.

You know i had asked about replacement mufflers before and someone pointed me to some in the JC Whitney catalog that were reasonable that they had bought and liked well enough. You might look there. If I remember it was
these.

JMK aren't those taller than stock? I was thinking mine are in the 12" range...
