gpz750 chin rattle
16 Mar 2019 18:43
Hi everybody
first post on this forum but hope you can help
I have a 1982 gpz750 at idle the motor has a very bad chain rattle
I don't think it is a cam chain rattle but I could be wrong
When I let the clutch out as the engine loads up the noise goes
Thanks Tony

The chain rattle at idle probably is the PRIMARY chain. This is not at all uncommon is the carbs are not properly synced or if the idle speed is set too low. What is the idle rpm? Ed

Assuming the noise is only present when the engine is idling, and with 1200 rpm idle speed, I suspect the problem is that the carbs still need to be synced a bit. Ed

The rattle is probably a combination of out of sync carbs, coupled with cam chain rattle, primary chain rattle and clutch basket dampers hardened, the latter of these two are the least easiest to deal with, but the 650/750 engines are known for this right up until they put a primary chain tensioner on in the late 1990's, and this does not cure all of it.

In an earlier reply I said "cam chain". I meant to say "primary chain". Sorry about that . I went back and corrected it. Ed
