I use a piece of irrigation wire to adjust the slides or butterflies and make them the same. If one carb doesn't have an adjustment use the idle screw to lower it then set the others the same. Sounds like two are way out.

What is irrigation wire lol What diameter should I use ? I did look at theKZ650 carb. sync instructions but those carb are different than mine. How about an initial pilot jet setting ? Thanks for your help.

A piece of phone wire would work or a drill bit that size. I'd start at 1 1/4 turns and go from there.

I believe an 81 KZ1000J has BS34 CV carbs, which need to be vacuum synchronized per FSM procedure.

After fighting to install the new air box to carb boots I guess I should pull the carbs, clean all jets and passage ways again and do a Bench sync. I'm not looking forward to fighting to remove the carbs again AAARRGGG lol

I replied in your carb thread. If you can't go though them following the tutorial I provided send me a PM and I'll either help you with the carbs myself or recommend someone else that can.

I can't help also wonder about maintenance in general. Did you verify spark on all cylinders? Adjust the valves? Basically, it's very difficult to perform troubleshooting on a bike until all the maintenance is up to date.

Nessism, Thanks for all your advice and info. The engine was rebuilt from the ground up lol. Timing is correct and have good spark on all 4 as viewed with a color tune spark plug. Did you read my other post about the #4 carb not having a choke enricher and the 2 different numbered jets ? #1 and #4 had R210 main jets and #2 and #3 had R217 jets. I do have 2 spare R210 jets and am on the fence about making them all R210. The other issue I had is that 2 of the internal pilot jets have stripped heads (no screwdriver slot), not sure how to proceed with that. Thank you very much, it is appreciated beyond words. Jon

Hello again, I removed and soaked the carbs, blew through all the passageways with leaner and 100 psi air. They are back together and remounted for a start tomorrow. I asked before if anyone knew what the exhaust pipe temperature should be where they exit the heads. I had no replies and am still looking for an answer lol. I will post an update again after hopeful successfull start up tomorrow. Thanks again, Jon

I dont have a figure for you but temperature should be such that if you spray a little water from a spray bottle or sprinkle a few drops with your fingers or even spit on the header where it exits the head it should immediately sizzle right off if that cylinder is firing. And this is within seconds of starting the engine.
