Weird noise from crankcase
06 Sep 2018 16:13
Hey guys I accidentally dropped my bike on the left side while working on it and now there’s this weird noise coming from the crankcase, it almost sounds like a buffeting air leak but I know it’s not. And it increases with RPM. ’m gonna try to get a video up, I just hope nothings broken. 1982 Kz550 C

Calvin, Calvin, Calvin. Now you know that we try to help guide you in the right direction every time you want to know something, but PLEASE calm down and hold your camera steady and in focus. Describe exactly WHAT hit the ground, and WHERE any visible damage or scrapes might be located. Otay?

07 Sep 2018 07:09There’s the second video. So visible damage is on the crashbar, handle bar, small scrapes on the air cooler fins. It definitely could have made that noise before and I got paranoid, what do you guys think?

Don't really hear anything. You can take a long screw driver or something, place it next to your ear and probe the case to locate the sound. If the cam is touching it while you're doing it, it will pick up the sounds better.

What Steve said!
The stator cover might have gotten bumped. Perhaps your rotor is scraping the stator slightly. Not a big deal to inspect. Make sure the alignment dowels are in the cover. There should be at least 2 alignment pins that 2 bolts pass through. (may be missing)

I’ll check it out. Is there any oil that’s going to come out of that cover when I take it off? Probably a stupid question lol

There should be no oil coming out of the alternator cover. It is dry on the Kz550's. There is an oil seal in there, and sometimes you might see a few drops of oil, but usually the crank-end seals on the 550 are really good. It usually takes crank damage to get those seals leaking.
I don't hear anything obvious on the video (I only watched the first one so far), but the video was short and not very clear sounding.

I don't know there Calvin. I don't own one. My bike has the starter clutch attached to the rotor, and oil throughout the alternator.
Put a pan under it, just in case. eh? lol

07 Sep 2018 08:50 - 07 Sep 2018 08:52I second this. there is nothing clear in either of the video's. except that calvin seems to have calmed down a tad bit in the second one, and I could see that he indeed does have a crash bar protecting the left case. (was looking for this in the first video.) Of course if is is solid, and the cover didn't get bumped is anybody's guess.loudhvx wrote: snip... I took these pictures, I unscrewed the stator and screwed it back just to be safe. And there did seem to be some metal dust that gathered in there. Once I put it back together, the noise went away. I’m gonna Ride it around the next couple days and see if it comes back.

Did you make sure the rotor was tight and no loose crap in there? Looks like it was rubbing on something.
