anyone have info on the old Andrews 2x cams and piston kit
23 Jun 2018 08:50
Hi guys,
I bought an old KZ900 engine off a guy on craigslist that belonged to his uncle years ago. Just the engine, it had been in a shed for at least 20-25 years. He said his uncle blew the stock engine in his bike and then had a shop overbore it. According to him he immediately crashed the bike and totalled it, somehow kept the engine and threw it in the shed. The engine is seized but I opened it up and it has Andrews 2x cams. The pistons and bores look fine and the rings move freely. I measured the pistons and it looks like it is 1015 so I am guessing he got the piston and cam kit back in the day. I have a KZ900 and I am thinking I would like to swap all that stuff right over. Anyone have any info on these cams and pistons? I am looking for insatallation instructions if it is available, and what rings and teflon buttons I would need for it all etc.

By the way I say it is seized because the 17mm nut on the crank seems stripped it just spins but doesn't turn anything. The head and jugs came right off and didn't seem to be why the engine would not turn. the kickstarter lever was removed so I didn't try that. I made sure there was oil in it before I did anything.

SWest just posted a PDF of Andrews cam specs in another thread. I'll see if I can find it again before he sees this.

I'd take the spark advance off and see if the pin on the crank is sheared.

A lot of people try to turn the crank with that 17mm "nut". It is not realy a nut, in fact Kawasaki calls it a washer. The only thing preventing it from spinning around like yours is, is a small locating pin. Likely it has been snapped off. It is much safer to turn the crank with the smaller (13mm?) bolt. Even better might be to take off the generator cover and stator, and turn it by hand from that end.

Thanks TexasKZ, and SWest that's exactly what I was looking for on the cams. It seems I got a deal for what I paid for that engine and it's not just a boat anchor. Now I just have to decide about the pistons. I am still wondering if they are wiseco's or something similar. If so there must be rings and buttons available to swap them over.

They look like Wiseco's but put up closer pics inside and out to be sure. I have both styles. The rings fit both.
