I have seen 7 18 mm 83-84 cranks come out of stock engines, not one was welded. Out of the seven, 4 had no. 5 main and thrust washer destroyed, one had ruined rods and rod bearings. I'm planning on buying three more junkyard engines to try and find a good 18 mm crank to start with; we'll see if any of those got factory or even dealer welded...

I spent near $2K on a falicon built crank with falicon 18 mm knife rods for my 1395 project, but I started with a twisted 81 1000J 17 mm crank...nice , but too expensive for Beater II's new 1170 cc engine.

I've been told the 17 and 18 mm cranks are different somehow (besides the rods), but I've put both side by side and cannot see any outward differences in the bearings, counterweights, etc.

Does anyone have any more info on that? I mean, if I have 18 mm GPz rods, can't I just start with a 17 mm crank and re-assemble it with the 18 mm rods? I have been told by some yes, and others no. Has anyone here had it done?
