I've got the same setup you have but with the piston kit fitted, also ape studs and nuts. It's been fine for me but some people weld for peace of mind.I did twist a crank years ago when i missed a gear when revving my GS1000 hard.

Has anyone seen an 83/84 18mm pin crank welded from the factory ? Been told they don't exist but I've come across at least three out of stock GPZ 1100 engines. Still have two.

Anything else different besides pin diameter from the 17mm cranks?

17mm crank, which i had balanced. Also gpz1100b2 cams, didn't want it too peaky.I never got the crank balanced because of the piston kit, it got done when it was getting overhauled when i first got the bike.

17mm >< 18mm...

For what advantage?

Marginally stronger for the extra power of the unitrack spec motor .
They were thinking along the same lines as when they went to bigger pins on the mk2 crank.
Not a crucial upgrade though.
Plenty of very high hp motors running around on 17mm pins just fine.

I've had several cranks welded for race applications also but if you would put the 3 cranks with the ignition side facing you and the ignition alignment pins in the same position (say 12 o'clock) the welds would be in the exact position, same size and quality as if done in factory. All the motors seemed untouched. Interesting .
