Welcome to the Wonderful World of Motocycling!
You have had your bike serviced recently, correct? You posted that you assumed the shop adjusted your valves. You should have received an itemized service bill. I would not assume that a shop will adjust valves unless you authorized the work.
Next, if you are looking to get some more riding experience away from all the rolling cages in the City, come on out about an hour west. I can show you plenty of nice roads with less concern about pedestrians, cars, trucks, etc.
Finally, I may be riding out to the Denver area or somewhere nearby this summer as well. There is a certain Relay going on. I will let others fill you in if they wish. Just wanted to let you know that what others are advising is good intel. Ride the secondary roads, staying off the Super Slabs IS the way to go. Frequent breaks for fuel, hydration and bike safety checks would be recommended as well.
Wish you the best on your ambitious ride plans.

Back in '77 I rode from Indianapolis to Denver on a KZ900 in one day on a cross-country trip dodging thunderstorms all the way.
I wish I could have taken the back roads, but they didn't look much better than the interstate. :pinch:

I live near Portland, Oregon and my rider is a '76 KZ900 I bought new. I'm also in the process of restoring another one and a '73 Z1.
