Great idea Jack! Absolutely without a doubt direct communication is key.

Any thoughts, ideas, lessons learned for this year's riders?

After following and participating in this endeavor for 2 years, I've come to the opinion that a lot of the delays in transfers has been the result of two riders trying to coordinate a meeting spot half way between the homes of those involved. I know, I'm guilty myself. If the flag holder just rides to the recipients location and hands the flag over only one rider has to make the ride.

The arguement will be the flag holder has to ride twice as far. But he only has to ride once, to drop it off. He doesn't have to ride to pick it up. Only one trip has to be scheduled. I think this very well could cut delays by a whole bunch. We REALLY need to get this finished this summer by August 4 or sooner.

There are other reasons for a meeting at a" middle " location. Historic significance, moto related site, scenic location etc. That's fine if a meet can be arranged in a short period of time, if it will take more than a week or two to transfer the flag the two riders do not have to meet some place special. Just ride and deliver or ride and pick it up, whoever can ride soonest. This procedure is especially useful if the distance between riders is short. It's silly to keep the flag for an extended period if the flag is only moving a short way. Just my $.02 worth.

I could not agree more Tom. Thank you for sharing.

I think BlueJ58 and Tom have both made very valid points regarding communicating and keeping The Relay Flag moving. It simply comes down to each rider who commits being involved, staying involved, and using common sense. Looking forward to a great riding season and seeing many more postive Relay experience posts.

After 7 months of inactivity, Hopefully the Flag will once again move this weekend. I emailed Schuss and he Really wants to Move it. He feels bad about having it for so long. Once it gets back into Oregon, to Toolmaker I may take it again, then down to Slayer61 in N.CA. I'd love to see more riders get involved. But so far it has been very limited for members to post their wish for involvement. But we will overcome all obstacles and make it happen, the flag Will be at the Rally. ;)

MotorHead,

You may have already tried this, but when putting together the East Coast leg I took out ads on Craigslist in cities where we needed to find a rider. It turned up a few folks.

Will definitely get a hold of you for the ride south, if or when it happens.
Are you still up for the 4 Corners Rally? We need a group from our area to attend. I've taken that week off of work.

No I haven't tried that. There used to be so many people from KZR that wanted to take part in the relay the first year, but as time passes there is less interest. To bad for those who don't want to take part any more, as its a great reason to ride and meet fellow riders, see some new roads even. When you look at the relay map of KZR members, there are lots of people you marked their locations. I try to get those who did mark their location interested first.

Bingo! Back when I was seeking KZ Riders for the Rocky Mountain Leg, I looked at the map and actually went through this relay thread for any riders in those states that had expressed interest. I was able to get Kaw-a-holic and even some in the Northwest interested. Sure, there will be several that just don't answer or do not have any current interest. However, there will be some who may not be on here regularly that will check in. I suggest PMing all you do not have direct contact info but have expressed interest. AND, best practice would be to obtain all contact info including phones and physcical address. Good Luck Everyone!

Any news on moving the flag? Maybe it would make sense to drop it in the mail to someone who can get it on the road again. Ed

Just heard from Shuss, looks like next weekend, end of the month he will meet Toolmaker. Hopefully it will then be in Portland.
ED, are you going to the 4 corners rally? :cheer:
