You mean tighten with a torque wrench.. right??? You wouldnt dare tighten with a cresent wrench to some unknown torque! YOU COULD BE THE NEXT "TORQUE FREEING" VICTIM!!!
:woohoo: :silly: :pinch:
I know its probly extremely rare with the street variety of bikes, but it has been mentioned to pay attention more than once in the dirt circles around here, and I've seen it happen to an MXer.
Its alway comes down to terrible (like zero) maintenence and usually rough ridin'
Peace...

I had a custom axle made with castles on both sides, torqued to specs, NO PROBLEM

while replacing the rear tire on my 1983 kz550 ltd yesterday i noticed the owner's manual indicates the axle nut should be on the sprocket side (see picture) but a/the previous owner had installed it on the brake side. the manual also shows a spacer (red arrow pointing at it in picture on right) as being installed on the brake side while the parts list from kawasaki.com shows the same spacer apparently on the sprocket side.
does anyone know if it really matters which side the spacer is on? i installed it on the brake side per the manual but don't know that it really matters as long as the wheel is aligned properly.

On the Z1's with 4-4 pipes, the nut must go on the right side. The clearance on the left side of the bike is very tight between the pipes and the axle. If you put a castle nut on the left side, you will chew into the pipes.

Per Dave Marston's Developmental History of the Z1:
THROUGH THE WHEEL RAN A 20MM ZINC PLATED AXLE....SECURED WITH AN 18MM ZINC PLATED CASTLE NUT
Good Fortune!
I'd like to see how you'd do that regardless of what side the nut is on.
