Wideband O2 kit recommendations? was created by Zaddict
Hi All,
I'm thinking I'd like to install a wideband O2 sensor to help dial in my carb settings for my new Wiseco 615cc setup.  I see a lot of slick looking systems out there but it doesn't seem like many (any?) are designed for motorcycles. I'm thinking the gauge would need to be waterproof, and I haven't found any that include mounting hardware. I'm looking for recommendations and/or experiences people have had. Thank you!

I think if you were doing any carb testing your not going to go out in a rain storm, you may get caught in one but with the precise forecast these days that is quite unlikely.

On the 8th page of my project build I made a gauge cover and mount for a AEM AFR UEGO gauge (self contained gauge and controller)

In the past I have used a Innovate controller kit thru a PC (tuning a alcohol injected drag bike)
I also am doing a DFI conversion using a 14 point seven brand controller with a Mirosquirt ECU. Both setups use Bosch LSU49 O2 sensor, non brand name sensors don't work with the software or gauges. Cheaping out on a low cost O2 sensor does not make sense.

I don't recommend having a permanent gauge as they are too distracting (especially the sweeping type) but some people do and its a personal choice. Once the carbs are running correctly there is no need to have it mounted.

Yeah, I just use mine when testing. I had the Innovate LM-2, but mine had a habit of shutting down then restarting. It was a pain.

I went to www.14point7.com and got his SLC FREE 2. I ended up getting 2 of those units.
I wouldn't run mine all of the time as the O2 sensors stick out to the side asking to get broken off.
For $120 each with sensor, it's a pretty good deal. Note: he's located in Canada.
All of SLC FREE 2 build is open sourced. You can build one if you wish.

I stacked mine and put a tripod bushing in the back to be able to mount it to a gopro arm.

There is only one sensor plugged in.

I use an AFR gauge in my cars and move it around when I tune. They don't need to be permanently installed and you can plug up the O2 sensor bung when not in use. I have not considered using it on my bikes but now that I think about it....

OK, thanks all. I suppose you're right, I can just mount the sensor and gauge when testing, no need for a permanent mount.

If your looking for a standalone gauge your probably going to have to cobble something up. I don't think I have ever seen one that is "motorcycle" specific since not many new bikes use carbs.

You can buy gauge mount pods designed for cars, but they would need to be modified to mount on a handlebar. The rest is pretty straight forward, just wiring and splicing into your harness.

I have not used my new AFR gauge yet, just wondering if it can survive the extra vibration that a bike makes VS a car.

Can you build a rubber mount into your setup ?

I believe there is a wideband AFR that uses your phone as the display. I think that would be perfect. I know of a guy using one, but I can't recall the brand.

Nice bit of kit but "a lot of coin" for something you would potentially use very infrequently unless you where running a shop (potentially once you have your jetting sorted it would live in a cupboard !!)

Yeah, not cheap but... I have more than one bike and several cars so with the just the additional cost of an O2 sensor bung I could use it all the time.

I did build in some rubber dampers but there is only so much you can do. Cars have more suspension and tires to smooth out the ride than bikes so it will have to be seen. That is why I like oil filled gauges over plain gauges. The AFR gauge also has a circuit board in it, that is what worries me the most. Since it will only be for limited use I am just hoping it will survive for that short amount of time.

It's a bargain compared to multiple dyno tuning sessions, or all the time I've already spent blindly swapping jets without quantitative data!
