Hey guys, I want to remove my keyed.ignition switch and am having a hard time finding info on it. Want to put in a push button start, kill switch, and secret power kill. I'm hoping to save me a bunch of time chasing wires and such. Any help with rewiring where the ignition plugged in would be very appreciated!! Thanks.

The factory wiring diagram for your bike will show contacts for each of the ignition switch positions. Duplicate the functions with what ever switches you choose. You didn't list the year/model of your bike, but most KZ's have a push button start. The keyed switch opens/closes power circuits to the lights and or ignition.

Alternatively, you could by a cheap motorcycle alarm off ebay with a remote start feature, and instead of hooking up the starter, have it so when you press button on the remote, the alarm disarms and simultaneously turns ignition system on. Then you just sit on bike and press starter button.
Or use the starter button on the remote for turning ignition system on.

Thanks guys, sorry...it's a 1980 kz550ltd. I have the manual with the schematic. Original controls are garbage, thought I'd relocate hidden switches. I was thinking the main kill would turn on all power then have a normal push start button somewhere. I originally had some pics from loudhvx I had seen somewhere, and now there gone. I'm a bit slow with electronics....lol

If you want a main power switch then you could wire an on/off toggle switch just after the main 20 amp fuse and place it under the seat.
Like MDZ1rider said check your wiring diagram which should have a table at the bottom showing what is connected to what when the ignition is switched on.
The pic below is an example only and may not work for your bike

Connect the wires (in the headlight shell) as shown in your version of the above pic and remove ignition switch.
Use the conventional kill switch and start button at the right handlebar cluster. You want these buttons at your right thumb not hidden away somewhere.

If you dont want to chase wires the my only other suggestion would be to use the old ignition switch and keep it permenantly in the ON position by breaking off the key or welding it there and using the toggle and right handlebar cluster switches as described above

My diagram sucks...lots of little non colored lines....takes me a while to sort things out, was thinking of scanning it and coloring it myself. Not that I'm gonna do it but I'm wondering why can't we use solid wire instead of strand?

I believe solid wire is more likely to crack due to vibration and other stresses.

Houses get solid wire; vehicles get stranded wire. :)

Also, stranded wire is more flexible than solid, so it's much easier to work with when routing it along a very crooked path and much easier to move around when necessary. Ed

Also, you should use open barrel terminals & bullets and make the crimps using an open barrel crimper --- the crimps are very strong. same as stock. Cycleterminal is where I got most of my electrical stuff. They have a nice selection. including a nice waterproof bullet terminal 10-pack & terminal covers.
