Hi all,

I've been sniffing around this forum for a while, but am new to posting. I just added my own "project" thread here and would appreciate any help, tips, tricks, encouragement or slaps on the wrist whenever I mess up. Which I will.

Anyhoo, I've been working on a simplified wiring diagram for my 1982 KZ1000p project. I wanted to get rid of anything that had to do with the original police stuff and also just make it more manageable. Less features, less wires. I drew up this diagram, using the Clymer manual and the Motorcycle Wiring Guide by John Partridge as my references, but having little experience with electrical and NONE with motorcycle wiring harnesses, I'm still not sure if this would actually work in real life.

Could someone much smarter than me take a look and let me know if I've covered all my bases or if I'm completely off?

Here's a link to the diagram in dropbox (hi-res): www.dropbox.com/s/jq0ikdt2e0qq2vk/KZ1000...g%20Diagram.png?dl=0

I'll also try to attach it directly to the post.

Any help appreciated! Thank you!

Very interested in this. Might end up going the same route as you with the simplified wiring. Not sure I want to deal with the self-cancelling turn signals, might just redo the whole thing.

Yeah, I'm getting rid of the self-cancelling turn signals and everything else that just seems like more trouble than it's worth!

In your diagram you may need to redo the tachometer.
The brown wire is the power wire & I think you'd want the splice before the Fr brake light switch (hand brake).

Here's a topic with a bunch of simplified wiring diagrams provided by loudhvx. I don't know if there's one for the KZ1000-P.
The KZ1000-J standard & 1000-K Ltd models had an electronic tachometer, as do some of the KZ1100 models.

Thanks for the info! That's a great thread. I did find one for a 1994 KZ1000P, which I think would be the same for mine, but without speedo lights and tachometer. I might just use that and "tach" on (badum-chi!) the tachometer and speedo light, referencing the manual.

That said, you think my diagram would work, if the tachometer wiring is fixed? I would feel immense accomplishment riding around on a bike with a wiring harness I designed myself - with a little help ;-)

Thanks again!

As drawn, the regulator/rectifier is missing connections and the ignition system is wired wrong, in such a way it will blow the main fuse or damage the igniter.

When I get a chance, I will modify the 1994 KzP bare-bones, and add a tach etc. It may take a day or two.

You might want to consider running the headlight hi/low and the horn through relays. It makes them brighter/louder and takes the load off the switches.

Cycle Terminal has some nice mini 20 amp 4 pins and blocks you could use.

Thanks, guys! As much as I'd love to figure things out on my own, I also don't want to set anything on fire...

Appreciate it!

It didn't take as long as expected. It's on the last page (p.20) of Mattylight thread, linked above.

I personally love all the extra wiring on my kzp. I've got my jacket heater wired into one of the sirens switches. When I get cold I just flipped the switch right at my thumb. The garage opener is wired into the other siren switch.
But i do umderstand downsizing too

Thank you! Drinks are on me if you're ever in LA...

theApehouse, that's a clever use of all that wiring!
